History of Egypt

Ancient Egypt's foundation is supposedly originated from early peoples whose life revolved around the Nile River and its rich soil and resources. The earliest history of Egypt found by archaeologists dates back to roughly 60,000 years ago. The Gerzean period (Around 3200 BC) is very notable, it is the time in which the first hieroglyphics were written, and when the names of early rulers started to appear on monuments; indicating the emergence of a political force. From then up until 2260 BC, there were several Dynasties of rulers. But after the 8th Dynasty, there was a sharp decline in the monarchy's political power. Art became more provincial, religion more democratic. Rulers were openly challenged. Commoners began claiming prerogatives that were previously only for royalty. The bureaucracy was no longer effective.

Egypt's Current Situation

Currently, many countries in the Middle East are crying out for justice from their corrupt government. Among these protesting countries was Egypt. In January of 2011, Egypt erupted in mass protests against the cruel ruling of President Hosni Mubarak. The protesters lost support from the military and U.S. after about 18 days. On February 11, Mubarak finally resigned, freeing the frustrated country from 30 years of autocratic rule. As this occurred, the military took its place in power. In March, voters created several constitutional amendments. These took affect, but the post-revolutionary country became overwhelmed with a constant sense of paranoia, as the military was slowly changing back to ruling with Mubarak's ways. Doubts quickly grew about the military's commitment to the revolution's ideals. A momentous occasion took place on live television in August, as Mubarak was wheeled in a hospital bed to the courtroom where he was charged with corruption and complicity for murdering protesters during his rule. More protests continued to break out every other month, and one of the most violent occurred on October 9th; 24 were left dead and over 200 wounded.
