Basque Fatherland and Liberty (Euzkadi Ta Askatasuna; ETA)

Location:

    Spain & France.

History:

Founded in 1959, activists sought out their own independent Basque homeland across southwestern France and northern Spain borders. The Spanish government has been combating against this Marxist separatist group since the era of General Francisco Franco. Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco and Popular Party Councilor Manuel Zamarreno are among some of the high-profile government figures the terrorists have kidnapped. There have also been a number of bombings and shootings towards government officials. In four decades they have claimed over 800 lives.

Member Amount:

The exact number is unsure, but it is estimated that there are about 20 activists, with several hundreds of supporters. It is also rumored that some ETA members have received training in countries such as Yemen, Libya, Lebanon, and Nicaragua. And a supposed hide-out place for the group is in Cuba.

Goals of Group:

The ETA has persistent goals to terrorize against anything to do with the Spanish and French governments.

Recent Activity:

This September, the ETA has been relentless with its actions. They have carried out bombings, shootings, and the assassination of a town councilor. Fortunately, more than 50 suspected ETA members have been arrested since last fall, breaking up and weakening cells of the organization. There was also a shocking amount of 100 lbs. of explosives confiscated.
